Nuevo Arenal,
Alajuela
Arenal Volcano
The Arenal region of Costa Rica is well-known for its amazing
natural beauty, being a tourist hotspot with millions of visitors
coming here every year. The small town of Nuevo Arenal is located
near the base of the Arenal Volcano, Costa Rica's most active
volcano and it is a must visit when exploring this region. Nuevo
Arenal is a picturesque and quaint town with close proximity to the
beautiful Lake Arenal, another beautiful spot that attracts tourists
every year.
How to get here:
Lying some 30 minutes from the town of Tilaran on the north east
side of Lake Arenal, Nuevo Arenal can be easily accessed from the
town of La Fortuna de San Carlos as well. The best way to get here
is to both fly to the San Jose International Airport or the Liberia
International Airport and then drive out to Nuevo Arenal.
The weather here is great as the climate remains cool and fresh all
year long since the town is located at an altitude of 620 meters
above sea level. Created in 1973 when a dam was built in the region,
Nuevo Arenal or New Arenal was built up when the waters of the lake
rose and the former town of Arenal disappeared underwater. Nuevo
Arenal was created on higher safer ground and today it is a small
town with all the basic necessities that people need.
In town there are a number of banking services, a health clinic,
grocery stores, mini-markets, a gas station, restaurants, hotels,
resorts, bars and plenty of souvenir shops and the nightlife in
Nuevo Arenal is quite active as well. When coming into town,
remember to make a stop at the German bakery for some delicious
local delicacies and snacks.
Lake Arenal
The Lake Arenal region is basically a large man made lake directly
beneath the volcano near the town of Fortuna and the Lake Arenal
area, both being worth spending time at. Among the many activities
of this awesome Costa Rica destination are
fishing, world-class windsurfing, boating, water skiing, soaking in
hot springs, horse back riding, bird watching or just relaxing and
enjoying the wonderful landscapes.
Fishing in Lake Arenal can be quite successful, as there are plenty
of rainbow bass and other fresh water fish, but for the more
adventurous, windsurfing in the lake is a great way to spend the
day. With strong winds lasting from November to April, Lake Arenal
attracts world class windsurfers from all over the world.
You can also take some lovely nature hikes around the lake area
where you will get the chance to see various types of birds and
animals, such as the Howler Monkeys, toucans, White Hawks and
Chachalacas.
Arenal Botanical Garden
As you get out of town, take the time to visit the lovely butterfly
farm and Arenal Botanical Gardens, some 4 km east of the Nuevo
Arenal. There are 2,200 rare tropical species of plants including
anthuriums, bromeliads, ferns, gingers, heliconias, roses, orchids,
and gorguras. The gardens also have an Asian garden with waterfalls
and live snakes in cages. Butterflies and birdlife are all over and
it is a magnificent place to rest while away a few hours.
